The Creation of the World

  1. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

  2. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

  3. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

  4. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness.

  5. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

  6. And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.”

  7. And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so.

  8. And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.

  9. And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so.

  10. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.

  11. And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so.

  12. The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

  13. And there was evening and there was morning, the third day.

  14. And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years,

  15. and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so.

  16. And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars.

  17. And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth,

  18. to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.

  19. And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.

  20. And God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.”

  21. So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

  22. And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.”

  23. And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day.

  24. And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds—livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so.

  25. And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

  26. Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

  27. So God created man in his own image,
      in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.

  28. And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

  29. And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.

  30. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so.

  31. And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

Bible Study Story: The Creation of the World — God’s Perfect Beginning

1. Introduction — “In the Beginning, God…”

Before there was time, light, or life — there was God.
No sound, no stars, no sea. Only the eternal presence of the Creator. Then, in an act of unmatched power and purpose, God spoke, and everything began.

Genesis 1:1–2 (KJV)
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.”

The world began not from chaos, but from the voice of God. Out of nothing, He formed everything. His Spirit hovered — a symbol of care and purpose — waiting to bring order to the void. This is the foundation of faith: everything begins with God.

Hebrews 11:3 (KJV) – “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God…”

2. Day One — The Birth of Light

Genesis 1:3–5 (KJV)
“And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night.”

At God’s first word, light burst through the darkness — radiant, pure, and perfect. There was no sun yet, no stars, no lamps. This light came directly from God Himself, the source of all illumination.

With light came time: day and night. God showed that He alone controls the rhythm of creation. Even before forming the sun, He proved that He is light (1 John 1:5).

3. Day Two — The Sky Above and Waters Below

Genesis 1:6–8 (KJV)
“And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.”

The second day revealed the heavens — a vast expanse separating the waters above from the waters below. The “firmament,” or sky, became the space where clouds gather and rain descends.

Here, God organized the atmosphere — the invisible breath of life that would one day sustain His creatures. The heavens declare His glory, and the air we breathe is His unseen gift.

Psalm 19:1 (KJV) – “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”

4. Day Three — Land, Sea, and Green Life

Genesis 1:9–13 (KJV)
“And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear…
And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind…”

As the waters pulled back, mountains rose and valleys sank. The dry land emerged — God named it Earth, and the gathered waters Seas. Then came the first burst of life: plants, trees, and every kind of vegetation.

Seeds began to sprout, each kind reproducing after its own kind. The earth, once silent and barren, now sang with color and fragrance. God was preparing a home — fertile and beautiful — for the life He would soon create.

Psalm 104:14 (KJV) – “He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man…”

5. Day Four — Sun, Moon, and Stars

Genesis 1:14–18 (KJV)
“And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night… and to be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years.”

On the fourth day, God filled the heavens with brilliance — the sun to rule the day, the moon to rule the night, and the stars scattered like diamonds across the canvas of the universe.

These celestial lights not only illuminate the earth but also mark the passage of time — seasons, days, and years. The universe is not random; it runs by divine design.
Even today, as we look at the stars, we’re reminded that the same God who made them knows each by name (Isaiah 40:26).

6. Day Five — The Waters and the Sky Come Alive

Genesis 1:20–22 (KJV)
“And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life… and fowl that may fly above the earth…”

The seas filled with movement — fish gliding, whales singing, creatures of every size and color. Above them, the sky danced with flight — birds soaring, wings beating in harmony.

God not only created life but blessed it, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply.” The world was no longer silent; it was alive with sound, motion, and purpose.

Psalm 148:7–10 (KJV) – “Praise the LORD from the earth, ye dragons, and all deeps: Fire, and hail; snow, and vapour; stormy wind fulfilling his word…”

7. Day Six — Land Animals and Humanity

Genesis 1:24–28 (KJV)
“And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind…
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness…
So God created man in his own image… male and female created he them.”

The sixth day crowned creation with life on land — cattle grazing, beasts roaming, insects humming. Yet the masterpiece was still to come.

Then, for the first time, God spoke in the plural: “Let us make man in our image.” This divine conversation hints at the Trinity — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit working together in perfect unity.

Humanity was made in God’s image — we do not know if we are in exact physical form as God, but in spirit, reason, creativity, and moral capacity. God gave mankind dominion over creation and the breath of life (Genesis 2:7).

This moment marks humanity’s dignity and purpose: to reflect God’s character, steward His creation, and live in fellowship with Him.

Psalm 8:4–6 (KJV) – “What is man, that thou art mindful of him? … For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.”

8. Day Seven — Rest and Completion

Genesis 2:2–3 (KJV)
“And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.”

On the seventh day, creation stood complete — whole, ordered, and perfect. God rested, not because He was weary, but to bless and sanctify the day.

This rest was a divine example — a rhythm of work and worship, action and stillness. The Sabbath became a symbol of peace between the Creator and His creation.

Exodus 20:11 (KJV) – “For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth… and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.”

The world was now ready — filled with light, life, and divine order, all declared “very good” (Genesis 1:31).

9. The Meaning and Message of Creation

The story of creation is more than an origin tale; it is a revelation of who God is:

  • He is Eternal — creation has a beginning, but God does not.

  • He is Powerful — He speaks, and worlds form.

  • He is Orderly — He brings beauty out of chaos.

  • He is Generous — everything He made was good and purposeful.

  • He is Relational — He created humanity for fellowship with Himself.

Colossians 1:16–17 (KJV) – “For by him were all things created… all things were created by him, and for him: and he is before all things, and by him all things consist.”

Creation is a declaration of God’s glory — a testimony that life, light, and purpose all flow from Him.

10. Conclusion — The Creator Still Creates

When we look at the heavens, the oceans, and the intricate details of life, we are reminded of one powerful truth: we serve a creative, intentional, and personal God.

The same God who spoke light into darkness still speaks life into broken hearts today.
The Creator of the universe is also the Redeemer of souls. Just as He brought order to the formless world, He can bring purpose to our lives when we surrender to Him.

2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV) – “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
And even now, He continues to create — shaping hearts, renewing minds, and forming a people who reflect His glory.
